Why Reciprocate?

By Gil delos Santos
Not long ago, I was bragged upon of being desperate to ambition certain people's success. I smiled, got amused with the idea inside. They seem universal with success definition. I can claim success too in my own little world especially against those personalities they compare me with. If a man cannot approve certain facts in life, I am curious how God delivers the approval.

Success is mostly associated with wealth and material possessions to the mind of the average. Gina Lopez is the real representation of success in my own definition. It is measured how much impact we contribute to the lives of the people effecting them to become better than how they were in the aspects we intend them to improve. Learn her deeds the same way how you should learn the story of the neighbors whom you criticize. Your goal in life determines your own definition of success.

I believe religion preaches universal kindness, not that "WHO" most people worship on Sundays then make them a bitch everytime they step out of the church. Love begets love. Even if we agree or not, hate begets hate too. To feel hate is not evil as a reaction in the context of being provoked, hypocrisy is. The universe needs reciprocation even how kind we intend to be. The unkind needs to see what they abuse when they are on a hostile stance.

Certain people are sent to the universe to challenge and critique us. Let them be. Take it as long as your rights are not violated or taken away otherwise give them a good challenge too. At the end, along with them you will all realize that every challenge always offers opportunity. An opportunity to convert ourselves become our better version. Do not just do yoga to beautify our social media bio, practice its principle. We are what we attract. Spread kindness not gossip. Most importantly, judge through the use of logical mind not through the influence fed by our circle from a second hand information.

Right or wrong, having the balls to own up personal flaw is power. However this is the hardest when no one is above us who can give the presence of balance to open our close mind. This is the reason why people with superiority complex meet their match in the same level through other people's strong personality too. They'd fight hard to stay in the throne of being right. They would even use religious passages (made by other humans too) to justify their stances. At the end of the day, it is not who is right or who is wrong as there is no absolute right nor absolute wrong anyway but how we are able to accommodate to accept own mistakes and settle differences equally. None of us is perfect. Stop having the ears of the perfectionists that don't give a chance to listen or the heart with one beat of being self-righteous. You would know you have this unrealized self-righteousness within you if you see this a lot from others. Mirror principle?

This makes reciprocity become a religion I practice. I feel I am compelled to learn my own life lessons from my detractors. Reciprocally, they'd learn their own lessons from me. For this, I am beyond grateful to the universe for putting these people up together to challenge to change somethings not only for the better, but for the best of us. Looking forward to the new mindset everyday. Hope you too!

OVER-DEVELOPMENT STRIPS BORACAY'S CULTURAL IDENTITY

By Gil delos Santos For us local Boracaynons, taking over or giving away our cultural spaces to mega corporations and government projects disable us to conduct traditional activites on public spaces that belonged to the community.  That's how Boracay's cultural identity is lost due to over-development.  Sa Baryo (that's how we traditionally call Manocmanoc proper), in my childhood, Manocmanoc Beach was our playground. We used to catch and play with "guyokoy", hermit crabs or "bungog" and "mawik" all day. Swim in the water everyday like it's our own paradise—unbothered, undisturbed. In the afternoon, our oldies gather at the shore to wait for Nong Musing and Nong Rudy, our local fisherfolks, to bring fish to the community which at that time "Lambiyong" or "Balangawan" costs 5 pesos per caltex (1 liter tub). During the monsoon season, a sandbar is formed near Cagban Beach which we call "Recudo". After...

Understanding Low Foreign Arrival

By Gil delos Santos While the western world now combats against over tourism, the Philippines in other hand struggles to get a good share on foreign arrivals: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1Q44TeFswV/ The latest Seasia stats report placed the Philippines at the bottom with 3m arrivals from January to August 2025 versus the top: Malaysia and Thailand with over 20m respectively, Vietnam with 13m.  Pre-pandemic (in 2019), Thailand records 30m+, Vietnam 18m, The Philippines with 8m. It has always been a struggle for the Philippines. But 2025 is looking the worst so far.  We always read reports on statistics but we don't often see the reasons why we're behind—except for the usual complains how bad our Department of Tourism is being run. I have followed the tourist arrival stats and trends in the past years. I research and collect tourist impressions over time. Here's what I found out: FACTORS AFFECTING LOW FOREIGN ARRIVAL 1) 𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶...

BORACAY AS LUXURY DESTINATION

By Gil delos Santos Recognized as the World's Leading Luxury Island Destination again in 2025, Boracay can take advantage to gain in solidifying its share in the "luxury" market. Marketing efforts must target the niche luxury slow travellers.  Boracay does need Tiktok vloggers in contrast to most people's exaggerated regard for influencers. Here's why: 1) Vloggers are not spenders (in general). They always demand xdeals and sponsorships if not paid. 2) The viewing Tiktok community are mostly validation seeking which the influencers take advantage of in giving affirmations and "pa-inggit" through their contents focused to trigger emotions. 3) The wealthy and the professionals don't have time and interest on Tiktok. They have life standards most people can't afford. They don't seek approval nor validation. These are the people we want to attract to come to Boracay. They are spenders that don't care about the price tags—people with value and...
