Free-damn

(March 2011)

With limited access to media in the old days, freedom of expression was a struggle until the commerce behind it was discovered sooner (later propelled into a global marketing capability). In the local scene, the television giants inevitably become less prudent (never to be left behind) to catch up with the trend for business sake. The western influence has gone spread-out. News TV stations like in America bulge out like mushrooms in the cow´s shit to have a venue for the smallest nonsense talks. Well, the ability to magnify small holes draws public attention, public attention boasts up good business. The on-going war over networks shows a fact proof. Friends become worst enemies when a spot in ranking is contested upon, that´s how grand the business behind the industry.

In this time of economic despair, both our private and public entities are mostly found broken. It is the product of a phenomenal invention created by the people against the former dictator´s government – later prospered massively around the government tables. Because Marcos amassed millions effortlessly; wannabes are everywhere now – going into the easy way. Though degrading, foreign people´s impression – in going into politics as the easiest way to get rich in the Philippines has a fair truth in it. This situation will remain up to the last human race if the emphasis for Christian values just sits in a niche. A maximum level of vigilance should start its first steps at home.

Taking my own measures within my circle, though perfectly imperfect, I always try to be Christian in a way. Participating in a Holy Eucharist was always enlightening until my previous Sunday´s experience. Freedom of speech has so much taken its toll now. Though the church and the state have distinct terms of separation, I always keep an open-mind. I don´t intend to judge, nothing I have against the person, but the mass celebrant happened to express opinions (in his homily) way beyond prudence by directly demanding the church goers to oppose the “Reproductive Health Bill” initiative. Adding a threat that goes, “would you like us to suffer like Japan?” “Abortion is legal there, their God is Buddha; now look at them! When RH Bill becomes a law, they´ll kill the baby inside you once they learn you´re pregnant”, he continues. And in criticizing PNoy´s position about the said bill, he boasted that population control is not the solution to resolve poverty in the Philippines citing China as an example articulating the billion population of China against the Philippines. Wouldn´t you consider the density index before making as such statement? What about the people´s right to correct information?

Freedom used to be the drive to achieve peace. Freedom of speech used to be a powerful act to raise awareness to liberate struggles and to free difficult situations. These days, both are used to accomplish dark intentions in a glimmering light of media more graceful than who tells the truth; too many examples to cite. Give glory to good intentions blocked by Gloria, be merciful to people who seek forgiveness mind not Merceditas, be generally kind 50 million times even without “pabaon”.

The now power of media is dominating the air of commercialization in a mask of the “public interest´s” disguise. The viewing and listening public finds a good form of entertainment in return - proving media´s effective marketing strategy. Who benefits from all these public hearings in the lower house and in the senate anyway? In little fairness, the public gets the chance to be aware of what they deserve to know somehow. That´s the mere consolation of it, because all the inquiries from the past majorly didn´t reach the point where justice should have been served. The Filipino people always end up the loser. The continuing public trials don´t interest me anymore when I think of every outcome from the past. The fertilizer fund scam was such a big Joke-jok Bol-only. ZTE scandal dissolved like sugar on Jun Lozada´s sweet-tea. Eh?

Only when Juan dela Cruz lives up with principle not for sale, it would be the time when freedom is worth fighting for.

WALKING THE IGBARAS CIRCUIT FOR 3-DAYS + 1

By Gil delos Santos IGBARAS is a third class municipality in the South-western part of Iloilo province known to be one of the hiker's favorite destinations as they are blessed with waterfalls, caves, climbing rocks, beautiful mountain ridges which the popular Mount Napulak belongs to, and locals with notable genuine hospitality. We initiated the hike from Barangay Igcabugao which we had to pass through a community of mountain residents as we ascend to our first Mountain, Napulak. I had absorbed a good load of happy innocent vibe connecting to the children before starting the proper mountain journey. These kids have physically grown from the time I last saw them in my previous visits. At the same time, the reconnection naturally streamed down and effortlessly grown too. That's a good "pabaon" - their innocent smiles and timid but genuine thank you for the little present I have for them. Getting to Mount Napulak once again is a mix of happy and little concer...

Be free

Be free Self-betrayal is imprisoning ourself in the cells of envy believing that we are hell special to deserve the world's importance by seeking validation from recruited flying monkeys than be accountable to our misery brought by wrong decisions.  Be our own source of happiness. No one's responsible for it but ourselves. Give no scapegoats. No one is perfect but we can be perfect with intentions to let go and let be with no ssshht. Public proud appearances could  be a reverse happy projection by a sad inner self. Seeking validation is an abyss for an unreachable self discontent. Be truthful with our own truth and give no blame to others for our own missed target.  Rest restless souls. Don't let our silence speak misery. Hope we find peace in our quiet solace.

Local's Perspective on The Proposed Boracay Bridge

By: Gil delos Santos WHAT HOPE IS LEFT FOR BORACAY? Boracay is its people. Boracay is its community. Boracay is its natural treasures. It's dark how the future of sustainability and community for Boracay look like. Let's be part of the light for hope.  THEN As a kid born and raised in Manocmanoc, the Manocmanoc Beach was our everyday playground. Great memories! The sense of ownership that we have for our playgrounds gives us the privilege of entitlement that we feel it is our home. It was a pride each time to warmly welcome visitors to share our space with them. NOW We feel strangers to our old playgrounds. We cannot access them anymore 40 years later. We have not imagined that it wasn't owned by the community. The provincial government installed a cargo port in the Western side of Manocmanoc Beach preventing the natural sand movements and we lost the sandbar that is being formed every habagat season — which we used to call "Recudo". Recudo is gone forever!!  We a...
